(*) PFAS is the short form for per- and polyfluorinated chemicals, a group of substances that includes more than 10,000 different substances. These have quite useful features that make products water-, dirt- or grease-repellent for a long time. Examples of products in which they are used are rain jackets, carpets, cushions or papers for food packaging. Although the substances are approved and have long been considered safe, they are increasingly accumulating in the environment even after their disposal due to their long lifespan. Due to the increasing concentrations in soil and water, they might be harmful.
Therefore, the EU is planning to ban the use of PFAS by around 2025. For food packaging there are alternatives, already. Countries like Denmark and California have already enacted bans. DREWSEN has been successfully producing packaging paper without PFAS since 2017: PROBARRIER Nature.
